District Chief Executive for Central Tongu Thomas Moore Zonyrah has bemoan what he says is the increasing numbers of teachers dedicating time that is supposed to be spent with students to sports betting.

The phenomenon according to him was affecting contact hours and hence impacting standard of education in the district negatively.

The Central Tongu DCE said this when the Member of Parliament for central Tongu donated some items to schools in the area as way of improving standard of education in the district.

Thomas Moore Zonyrah said he discovered the growing incident during his unannounced visits to some schools in the district especially in the area.

He said he witnessed the sight of teachers sitting under trees playing games leaving pupils to their fate and to play all day.

The DCE said the visits have led him to conclude that large numbers of the teachers are addicted to sports betting thus neglecting their duty.

He told the gathering he started the unannounced visits after the poor performance of basic school pupils in the 2018 BECE to ascertain the cause of the abysmal performance.

“No single student scored a single grade and so I decided to find out; only to find out that teachers love to play and discuss bets instead of teaching out kids.”.

When contacted, the Central Tongu district director of education Henry Hevi confirmed the findings of the DCE.

He added further checks revealed that some male teachers were having affairs with female pupils and steps are being taken to put an end to unethical behavior among some male teachers.

Mr. Hevi also said Head teachers who have failed to ensure their pupils make good grades will be transferred as part of measures to stamp out failure at the Basic education level in the district.
